Hundreds of women making a beeline at the General Post Offices in the city to open saving bank accounts in Indian Post Payment Bank (IPPB) as it facilitates receiving benefits under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme, following a word of mouth publicity that the central and state governments are going to announce major direct benefit transfer schemes. The trend has suddenly picked up after the presentation of Telangana State budget on March 19 this year. Hundreds of women turn up every day and stand in queues at the GPOs for long hours to open the IPPB savings account, similar to a bank account.
Interaction with the women at GPO, Abids revealed that they have come to know through word of mouth, and social media news about the announcement of major central and state schemes of cash transfer. Fatima Bee, who came to open an IPPB account at the General Post Office at Abids, said that she and her extended family members have opened 12 savings accounts by depositing `300 each to get benefit under a central scheme of direct cash transfer for women.
“Modi saab aur Revanth saab do hazaar rupaya har khwatin to dene wale hai. Is liye hum account shuru karne aaye hai (Modi and Revanth Reddy are going to transfer `2,000 to each woman. That’s why, I am opening this account),” she said, adding that having an IPPB account would also consolidate and complement various state and central level initiative
